This government report on the call for evidence sets out the commitments government will make to improve the process of switching suppliers based on the responses to the call for evidence closed in December 2015.
In July 2015, the UK Government published the Productivity Plan which set out a commitment to ‘Introduce clear new principles for consumer switching’. The principles were aimed at setting out an overarching set of aspirations and standards across energy, telecoms and current account switching, and recognising that they may also apply to wider products.
The principles are:
- It should be free
- It should be quick, easy and at an agreed date
- It should be led by the organisation with most interest in making the switching process work effectively
- Consumers should have access to their consumption or transaction data.
- Sites and tools providing comparisons to consumers that receive payments from suppliers should make clear where this affects the presentation of results.
- There should be an effective process for consumers to get redress if anything goes wrong in the switching process.
The call for evidence received a total of 564 responses. 505 consumers responded to the call for evidence, of which 418 had switched, 75 had considered switching but had not and 20 had not considered switching.
