Description

In 1772 Sir Joseph Banks commissioned John Bayly to engrave this map charting Captain James Cook’s survey of the Pacific. Banks, who travelled with Cook on his first voyage (1768–71), had the map published to highlight the regions discovered and the regions still to be explored in Cook’s upcoming second voyage (1772–75). This is the first printed map to feature the islands of New Zealand and the eastern coastline of Australia, named by Cook ‘New South Wales’.
