Description

The lifetime of the historian Laonikos Chalkokondyles (c. 1423-c. 1490) coincided with the fall of Constantinople and the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. His major work, the Histories, written towards the end of his life, covers the period between 1298 and 1462. It focuses in particular on the rise of the Turks and the Ottoman Empire and makes use of Turkish sources.

This 16th-century manuscript is on paper and contains the complete text of Laonikos’ Histories.

It was acquired by the British Museum at the sale of the library of Henry White in 1902.
