Description

This 15th century manuscript contains a version of the synopsis of law (Ponema Nomikon) by the civil servant and scholar Michael Attaleiates (c. 1022-80).

The final quarter of the text differs from the standard version printed in modern editions, and the scribe of the manuscript notes that the copy from which he worked was incomplete. Throughout the manuscript are marginal notes, primarily in Greek, but also a few in Latin.

The Ponema was an important work of reference for later students and scholars of Byzantine legal history. Michael Attaleiates is a major figure in Byzantine historiography. His landmark History deals with Byzantine history in the mid-11th century.

The British Museum purchased the manuscript in 1834 using the Bridgewater fund (£12,000 bequeathed in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater).
