This view of Northampton seen from the west was produced in 1721, on a summer tour of the county directed by the antiquary John Bridges (1666-1724). Bridges’ manuscript notes (at the Bodleian Library, Oxford) and Peter Tillemans’ associated studies (held here, at the British Library) were unfortunately never published in Bridges’ lifetime. He died before his county history could be printed. Some decades later the task of editing this vast archive fell to Peter Whalley (1722-91), who published it as The History and Antiquities of Northamptonshire in 1762 and 1769.
