Letter from Michael Tippett to Evelyn Maude (1943)

Description

Tippett was an inmate in Wormwood Scrubs for two months in 1943, imprisoned as a conscientious objector for refusing to undertake the war-related work assigned to him. This letter to his friend Evelyn Maude was written after his arrival in gaol, and lists a whole series of things he would like her to do, and books he would like sent. Among the first of his requests is that she should thank Ralph Vaughan Williams, who had publically defended Tippett during his trial.
