Photograph of a trench on the front line

Description

This photograph shows a pneumatic trench mortar, an indirect fire weapon, being operated by a French soldier in a frontline trench. This mortar was a response to a German minenwerfer, a short-range mortar fire, which increased the number of direct hits on trenches. The French weapon represents a technological adaptation in response to the new face of warfare emerging during World War One.
