Althea McNish is a Trinidadian artist and textile designer who came to Britain in the early 1950s. The day after graduating from the Royal College of Art she was commissioned by Liberty. In 1960 she produced this ‘Trinidad’ coconut palm furnishing fabric design for Heal’s.
As a teenager she was mentored by great Trinidadian painters such as Sybil Atteck and MP Alladin, but she has always remained wedded to her own style of painting inspired by Caribbean plant life. She spoke on this theme at an artists’ symposium for the Caribbean Artists Movement in 1973 and exhibited with them several times.
