This manuscript full score of Anton Webern’s Sechs Stücke für grosses Orchester, represents a fair copy of the work which was composed in 1909, and was presented by the composer to his teacher, Arnold Schoenberg, in May or June 1911. The front fly-leaf bears a dedication to Schoenberg in Webern’s handwriting, ‘Arnold Schönberg / meinem Lehrer / in höchster Liebe’.
Various cue markings and other annotations in this manuscript suggest that it was used in connection with the first performance, conducted by Schoenberg, on 31 March 1913. In terms of its layout and tempo directions, it is also textually close to the first edition, which was published by Webern himself in 1913.
The manuscript forms part of the remarkable collection of musical and literary autographs donated to the British Library by the heirs of Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) in 1986.
