Description

After becoming Garter King of Arms in 1607, William Segar (about 1554-1633) was granted arms in 1612 and knighted in 1616. Like Randle Holme, Segar was not only a herald, but also ‘a painter of significance’ who specialized in portraits. Segar’s full heraldic achievement shown in this drawing includes a shield of arms surmounted by crown, Gules and Ermine mantling, Argent and Azure wreath and helm crested with phoenix, supported by a rearing horse and a stag. His motto, ‘Nunc aut Nunquam’, appears on a scroll below.
