The Chartered Management Institute is the professional body for management practice in the United Kingdom. This White Paper is based on the results of Four decades in management pay: the national managers' salary survey 2013, plus discussions from an event held in October 2013 with over 200 managers and an expert panel - including the National Director of Health &Work at the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP), the Executive Vice President of Visa Europe, and Professor Susan Vinnicombe of Cranfield School of Management who is the lead author of the annual Women on Boards report, among others. This paper:

  • Highlights the nature and extent of the cultural barriers faced by women at work.
  • Offers practical steps individuals and organisations can take to remove or reduce such barriers.
  • Provides evidence of gender differences in pay, working conditions, and promotion.
  • Looks at the broad talent pipeline, not only those at Board level and just below.
