The Z-drugs comprise of a group of three non-benzodiazepine hypnotics: zaleplon, zolpidem and zopiclone. Zolpidem is the only Z-drug which is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act and its Regulations (Class C, Schedule 4, Part 1). The ACMD recommends that the other two Z-drugs, zaleplon and zopiclone, are similar in nature to zolpidem and should be controlled in the same manner.
