Samuel
Beeton (1831-77) was a successful publisher of magazines and household
reference works, notably his wife Isabella's Book of Household
Management. His lively boys' magazine, containing adventure
stories and special features interspersed with games and competitions,
was one of the earliest papers of this kind. It was practical and
educational, with an estimated circulation of 40,000 copies at the
height of its popularity in 1862; but broken by Isabella's death
at the age of 28 and his own tuberculosis, Beeton sold his copyrights
in 1866. The Boy's Own Magazine ceased publication in 1874.
