Hear how collections like our own have inspired the artists Amber Akaunu and Jill McKnight.

This is an online only event hosted on the British Library platform. Bookers will be sent a viewing link shortly before the event and will be able to watch at any time for 48 hours after the start time.

Hear how collections like our own have inspired the artists Amber Akaunu and Jill McKnight.

Both artists have recently created new work inspired by working with historic collections. Jill and Amber will detail their processes and work, sharing their experiences of researching the collections and creatively responding to them.

The event will also feature curators from the British Library and Leeds Art Gallery discussing the broader implications of working creatively with collections.

Jill McKnight’s exhibition Desire Lines will be on display at Leeds Art Gallery from 25 March to 16 October. Amber Akaunu’s work will feature as part of Celebrating Beryl Gilroy at British Library St Pancras from 17 March 26 June.

Amber Akaunu is a Liverpool born Nigerian-German filmmaker working in cinema, art, and television to document and explore Black culture, identity, and history. She is a BAFTA scholar and recent MA film graduate who is currently residing in South London. Her creative practice extends to her role as co-founder and editor of ROOT-ed Zine where she works to support Black, Asian and PoC artists in the North West of England through publishing, workshops, guest lectures, curating, and producing.

Jill McKnight is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, drawing, performance, writing and installation. Her practice focuses on exploring lesser-heard stories and voices, particularly from women and working-class people. She was artist-in-residence in 2021–22 for Collections in Dialogue, a co-commission between Leeds Art Gallery and the British Library. This culminated in the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery. McKnight has previously exhibited at institutions including The Art House, Wakefield; Saatchi Gallery; South London Gallery; Wysing Arts Centre and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. She was born in Sunderland and currently lives and works in Leeds.
