Monk, teacher and bestselling author Gelong Thubten, meets the editor of The Idler Tom Hodgkinson in conversation.

Gelong Thubten is a Buddhist monk who teaches meditation and specialises in providing non-religious mindfulness workshops and training programmes for businesses and organisations. Thubten has been a monk since 1993 at Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, has trained under some of the world's most accomplished teachers and spent over six years in intensive meditation retreats.

He is regarded today as one of the UK’s most influential mindfulness teachers, with over 20 years’ experience working with schools, universities, hospitals, businesses, prisons and addiction centres, as well as major corporations such as Google and organisations including the United Nations. He was even the meditation consultant for the Marvel film Dr Strange. Thubten collaborated with Ruby Wax and Ash Ranpura on the book How To Be Human: the Manual and the live tour that has followed, and his own bestselling book, A Monk’s Guide to Happiness, was published in June 2019.

Tom Hodgkinson is editor of the Idler magazine which he co-founded in 1993. He is the author of How to be Idle, How to be Free, The Idle Parent, Brave Old World and The Ukulele Handbook. In 2011, he and partner Victoria started a school for adults, The Idler Academy, and they continue to present many special events and festivals.
