How do artists use writing?

From urgent witness to exquisite calligraphy, artists use writing in a huge variety of ways. How have contemporary artists’ books been influenced by the rich history of writing? Artists talk alongside their extraordinary books.

Gill’s research, which includes aspects of artists books, is currently working on a project about the 'movable book' and will be joined by spatial designer Dia Batal, whose interests include design and how it impacts on people's lives within public and private spaces. The calligrapher Joumana Medlej, a specialist in the ancient Kufic script. Stevie Ronnie, artist, writer and founder of the Book Apothecary collective. The contemporary artist Sam Winston who is concerned with language as a carrier of messages along with it visual form.
