The award-winning Canadian actor and writer discusses his work and its relevance to modern Canada
Writer and performer Cliff Cardinal talks about his Dora Mavor Moore award winning play HUFF, set in the world of young First Nation Canadians and acclaimed for its raw biting humour and vivid imagery. He is now performing it in London at the ORIGINS Festival of First Nations and here discusses the play, its background and its modern Canadian context with festival director Michael Walling.
Cliff Cardinal’s first play Stitch debuted in SummerWorks 2011, winning Theatre Passe Muraille’s Emerging Artist Award. For HUFF, he won the Buddies in Bad Times Vanguard Award for Risk and Innovation at SummerWorks and two Dora Mavor Moore awards in the Independent Category (Outstanding Performance – Male; Outstanding New Play.) Maria Gets A New Life debuted at SummerWorks 2013. Cliff graduated from the playwriting program at the National Theatre School of Canada. His music project Cliff Cardinal and The Skylarks recently released their debut album This Is Not A Mistake.
Michael Walling founded Border Crossings in 1995. He studied History at Oxford University and subsequently trained at Trinity College, Dublin. He has directed numerous productions across four continents, winning awards for Two Gentlemen of Verona in the US and Paul & Virginie in Mauritius. He has directed the bulk of Border Crossings' productions, and is responsible for the overall direction of the company.
