Inspired by our exhibition Breaking the News, this two-week online course will equip you with the basic skills to draw your own comics and cartoon strips. Led by award-winning cartoonists Dr Nicola Streeten and Carol Isaacs (The Surreal McCoy) we’ll consider how messages and meaning are conveyed through the visual elements that make up an image, such as symbols, metaphors, stereotypes and humour. After exploring examples of recent political campaigns by the Professional Cartoonists’ Organisation, you’ll be guided through the process of producing a comic strip with practical drawing exercises. By the end of the two sessions you will have produced your own one-page campaign comic.

This course takes place on Zoom and we will email you a joining link the day before each one. It is an interactive course and there will be opportunities to speak to your fellow participants and the tutors during the sessions.

This course will run across the following dates:

  • Wednesday 6 July 2022, 17.30 – 19.00
  • Wednesday 13 July 2022, 17.30 – 19.00

Bring your own materials. This course takes place online and we will email you a materials list ahead of the course. It is designed to make use of materials you may already have at home.
