Learn the practice of Islamic Calligraphy
Course dates: Thursday 9 and Thursday 16 September
Over two weeks you will be introduced to the practice, methods and materials used by calligraphers in the Islamic calligraphy tradition. You will practice writing the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie the letters. Discover the age-old master-apprenticeship system that continues today and experience the first steps a novice takes at the start of their journey in becoming a calligrapher. The course includes a curator show-and-tell giving participants the opportunity to see some of the Library’s latest acquisitions.
This short course will take place on Zoom and the joining link will be emailed to you the day before. There will be opportunities to ask the tutor, Soraya Syed, questions throughout and have conversations with your fellow participants in the meeting.
Live subtitles will be provided by Stagetext.
Materials are provided for this course and will be posted to you – please provide the postal address when booking.
