Whether you’re a creative writer seeking new approaches or a translator looking for ways to develop your creative writing skills, join our weekend Masterclass and learn how the art of translation can truly transform your practice.
Translation isn’t only between different languages. We are all translators, and we translate on a daily basis – when we transfer our thoughts to spoken or written language, when we paraphrase or put things ‘in our own words’, when we describe an image, or express a feeling through art and poetry. For literary translators, translation is also an act of interpretation or adaptation that requires creative imagination and flair. Over the weekend we’ll take these ideas to their extremes through playful and inventive processes and writing activities. We’ll create texts inspired by smell, sound, taste and images, rewrite texts into new incarnations and incorporate a range of imaginative writing prompts that will bring insight to the process of literary translation and hone our creative writing skills. We’ll also have the rare opportunity to take inspiration directly from key items in the British Library collections.
No knowledge of a foreign language is necessary to take part in this course.
