Featuring Julia Donaldson, Joanna Trollope, Robert McCrum, David Olusoga, Sharlene Teo, Chris Riddell and Axel Scheffler
A night of letter readings to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the publisher Pan Macmillan.
Pan Macmillan authors including Julia Donaldson, David Olusoga, Sharlene Teo and Robert McCrum and Macmillan brothers descendent David Macmillan come together for a night of letters, stories and hidden histories from 175 years of publishing. They draw on a wealth of historic correspondence held by the British Library and in Macmillan’s own archive, with live illustration from Chris Riddell and Axel Scheffler.
The success of Macmillan was built on the foundation of the generous, intelligent and passionate character of two brothers, Daniel and Alexander. This is evidenced in their letters to and from authors, including Thomas Hardy, Christina Rossetti and Lewis Carroll, affectionately addressed 'Dear Mac'.
Alexander in particular was known for nurturing authors and proved an indispensable critic to many; Hardy was so in thrall that he sent manuscripts to Alexander before all other publishers, even after a series of rejections, asking for his sage advice. This warmth of character and good humour has been passed down through the generations to later editors and publishers whose letters are mostly held in the British Library and in Macmillan’s own archive.Join us for a fascinating insight into the relationship between publisher and writer, and a joyful celebration of some of the most important stories in Macmillan’s illustrious history.
