Times: 14.00 – 16.00
Gain an insight into the masterpieces that shaped Britain's earliest literary history on our introduction to the literature of the Anglo-Saxon age. From the first great epic of English poetry, Beowulf, to the enigmatic riddles of the Exeter Book, consider the masterpieces of Anglo-Saxon literary culture.
The scope of the course is broad – from riddling inscriptions in runes, to the Venerable Bede’s masterful historical prose, via elegiac poetry. The intention is to give a sense of the scope and diversity of early medieval literature in England, to coincide with the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms exhibition which showcases the Library's outstanding collection of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts alongside a large number of exceptional loans. The course covers the key texts from the exhibition and explores the history of these extraordinary books. The six-week course culminates in a guided tour of the exhibition, drawing together the work of the previous weeks.
