See this classic novel in a new light, as translator Nicolas Pasternak Slater and picture editor Maya Slater present their recent work producing a new translation illustrated with 70 pictures by Boris Pasternak’s father, Impressionist painter Leonid Pasternak, and reveal how the English Pasternak family experienced the writing and publication of Doctor Zhivago.Nicolas Pasternak Slater is the son of Boris Pasternak’s sister Lydia, and the grandson of painter Leonid Pasternak. Following a professional career as a medical specialist in haematology, he has taken up a second career as a translator of Russian literature. He has translated works by Pasternak, Lermontov, Pushkin, Tolstoy, Chekhov and Dostoevsky; his latest translation, Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago, has just been published by The Folio Society.
Among the books Maya Slater has edited are Boris Pasternak, A Family Correspondence 1921-1960, translated by her husband Nicolas Pasternak Slater, and her own verse translations of Molière plays. She is the author of Humour in the Works of Proust, The Craft of La Fontaine and other works on French literature; and of a novel, Mr Darcy’s Diary. She is the Editor and Picture Editor of Nicolas Pasternak Slater’s new translation of Doctor Zhivago (Folio). She is a Senior Research Fellow of Queen Mary, University of London.
