What might it have been like to encounter penguins, kangaroos and bears for the very first time and what can we learn about the practice of drawing from the sketches and watercolours Cook’s artists produced?

Drawing is an effective tool for investigating the world and helping us to make sense of what we see. Over the weekend we’ll explore the major new exhibition James Cook: The Voyages and make our own voyage of discovery to nearby ZSL London Zoo, where we’ll put our preparations into practice. You’ll experience the challenges and delights of quick-fire drawing exercises along with sustained studies of animals at rest. Encountering the wildlife – both extraordinary and familiar – will give you the opportunity to develop keener observational and drawing skills, as well helping you to consider the processes of drawing and the fluid line between seeing and inventing.
