Learn to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs
Course dates: Saturday 13 – Sunday 14 July 10.30 – 17.00
The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script is one of the most widely recognisable writing systems in the world, with a history of use that spans 3,000 years. Knowledge of how to read the script was lost around AD 350 and only regained from the 1820s through the efforts of Jean-Francois Champollion, Thomas Young, and many other subsequent scholars. The Rosetta Stone, which aided the initial decipherment, has become a symbol denoting the key to any difficult translation problem.
Yet how difficult is the hieroglyphic script? This course explores the principles behind the writing system, demonstrating how hieroglyphs encoded an expressive, pragmatic, and structured language in a logical and aesthetically pleasing way.
