An evening of readings and discussion with Ramsey Campbell, Jeremy Dyson, Reece Shearsmith and guests
An uncanny evening of readings and discussion to mark the arrival at the Library of Robert Aickman’s archive. Special guests include horror novelist Ramsey Campbell, a close friend of Aickman’s, his literary agent Leslie Gardner and US editor Victoria Nelson as well as writer Jeremy Dyson (TV series The League of Gentlemen, stage production Ghost Stories) and actor and writer Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen, Inside No.9). Together they explore his particular brand of macabre. The evening is introduced by Richard T Kelly, author of gothic horror novel The Possessions of Doctor Forrest, who curated Faber & Faber's major reissue of Aickman's work in 2014.
Robert Aickman is one of literature’s great cult figures, whose collections of ‘strange stories’, such as Dark Entries, The Wine-Dark Sea and Cold Hand in Mine, made him perhaps the 20 century’s most admired writer of the supernatural, with fans including Stephen King and Neil Gaiman. Aickman was a life-long enthusiast of Freud, in particular his theory of ‘the uncanny’.
