This workshop will take students on a literary journey to uncover the last 400 years of Black British writing. From Olaudah Equiano to Andrea Levy, groups will explore the plurality of themes in a range of Black British texts including novels, poetry and plays.
Students will explore the rich history of Black writing and literature in Britain using digitised manuscripts from the Black Literature Timeline as well as manuscripts on display in our Treasures of the British Library gallery and sound recordings from our collection. In addition, learners will interrogate publishing practices and industry barriers Black writers have faced through the years.
