An evening of cult Indian cinema

A musical delight set in the Muslim quarter of Lucknow, Pakeezah tells the story of Nargis, who grows up in a brothel with a desire to be loved and accepted by society. Considered one of the greatest films of director Kamal Amrohi, the screening is followed by a Q&A with his son, writer and director Tajdar Kamal Amohi.

Tajdar Kamal Amrohi is also the stepson of 'tragedy queen', Meena Kumari, star of Pakeezah. He is a film producer and director known for Ek Number Ka Chor (1990), Hum Sey Hai Jahaan (2008) and Duniyadari the Film (2017).

Director: Kamal Amrohi. India, 1972. In Hindi with English subtitles. 147 mins.

In association with Tongues on Fire as part of the UK Asian Film Festival 2019
