Gold and the Art of Manuscript Illumination

Unfortunately, an electrical fault is affecting some of our onsite services including those in our Knowledge Centre Theatre, where this event was due to take place. This means that this event will now takes place at the British Library Entrance Hall.

It is the brilliance of bright, shining gold against the jewel colours in medieval manuscripts that delights the eye and makes them so special. Renowned scribe and illuminator Patricia Lovett MBE explores and demonstrates the techniques of Western medieval miniature production, especially those in manuscripts in the British Library’s current Gold exhibition, from the use of powder gold made into paint, to gold and leaf gold on gesso.

After the talk Patricia will happily inscribe your names calligraphically and sign her latest British Library book: The Art and History of Calligraphy.

This event accompanies our summer exhibition Gold: 50 Spectacular Manuscripts from around the World (20 May – 2 October).

Patricia Lovett MBE is a professional scribe and illuminator using many of the techniques and materials used for the production of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, including using quills, vellum and gold. She has written over a dozen books on calligraphy and illumination including The Art and History of Calligraphy published by the British Library. Patricia is also Chair of the Heritage Crafts Association which supports, promotes and advocates traditional crafts in the UK. Patricia was awarded a National Honour for calligraphy and heritage crafts in 2012.
