Pragya Agarwal in conversation with Elinor Chelghorn.

This event will take place at the British Library. It will be simultaneously live streamed on the British Library platform. Tickets may be booked either to attend in person (physical), or to watch on our platform (online) either live or within 48 hours on catch up. Viewing links will be sent out shortly before the event.

The online version of this event will be live captioned.

Following her acclaimed books (M)otherhood and Wish We Knew What to Say: Talking with Children About Race, Professor Pragya Agarwal considers the history of gendering emotions, from the Wandering Wombs of Ancient Greece to Sigmund Freud’s ‘hysterical’ female patients – and beyond.

Do men and women really feel differently? And is our understanding of mental health determined by a set of unscientific, not to mention misogynistic, assumptions?

Prepare to get angry – but also better informed – as Prof Agarwal shares her findings with Dr Elinor Chelghorn, author of Unwell Women: A Journey Through Medicine and Myth in a Man-Made World.

If you’re attending in person, please arrive no later than 15 minutes before the start time of this event. We are committed to the safety of our event bookers. Find out how we are welcoming you to the Library safely.
