The British Library is proud to present a special listening session presented by critically acclaimed Eritrean rapper and producer, AWATE.

Hailing from Camden, AWATE joined the Library this summer as Artist-in-Residence for Unlocking Our Sound Heritage, delving through the treasure trove of artefacts in the sound archive to weave together a genre-bending piece exploring the subject of diaspora.

In a showcase of AWATE’s creative talents, listeners will journey across continents and cultures through an experimental musical piece incorporating oral history accounts of migration and the music of people on the move over the last 100 years.

This will be a rare and exciting chance to hear the sound archive come alive through an innovative blend of modern hip-hop production techniques and experimental storytelling.

Following the premiere of The Unearthed Odyssey, the leading London rapper will be joined on stage by journalist Kieran Yates, Yemi Abiade from music and style pioneers TRENCH, and a British Library sound curator for a conversation about Awate’s experience of working with the sound archives. The panel will also explore more widely how artists can bring new interpretations to archives and the importance of archiving black music.
