Explore the theme of migration in children’s literature

Read the course outline (pdf)

This 4-week online course explores how literature for children and young people depicts themes of migration, displacement and refugeedom. Inspired by the British Library’s past exhibition, Paddington: The Story of a Bear, this course takes a critical, literary look at how contemporary children’s literature explores the themes of movement, belonging and home, prominent in Michael Bond’s original stories.

You will be introduced to a range of literary works for children – from picture books to young adult fiction – and critical tools for reading and analysing children’s literature. We will consider how migration is depicted as a theme in textual material, and how these works adapt their messages for younger readers. How do fictional works for younger readers construct ideas of displacement, migration and refugeedom? Which formal, genre and language strategies might be visible in these works? How can literature for, or by young people be a tool for thinking about themes of migration and displacement?

Each session will include interactive activities and discussion led by the tutor, Dr Amy Burge, who is a Lecturer in Popular Fiction at the University of Birmingham. We will use online breakout rooms to encourage small group discussion with other students and with the tutor.

This course will run across the following dates:
