Travel back to a time of charms and rituals, when astrologers were revered scholars and magicians tried to summon demons. Over six weeks we’ll explore the place of magic and astrology in the medieval world, looking at the figure of the magician, the wise-woman and witch, as well as magical objects and ritual procedures. What does the practice of magic tell us about the medieval fascination with nature? And how were medicine, time-keeping, politics and individual life choices influenced by astrological concepts, calculations and iconography?
This course is led by Dr Sophie Page, lecturer in Medieval History, University College London. You’ll also hear from the curators of Harry Potter: A History of Magic on an exclusive tour of the exhibition.
