Meet Athelstan, the first King of England

In this illustrated talk, historian and film maker Michael Wood looks at the life of Athelstan, the first King of England, who reigned from 925 – 39 AD. Using the King’s own books (several of which survive in the British Library), as well as manuscript paintings, gift inscriptions, and fragments of lost poems, Michael takes us into the mind of a man who though he only reigned for 14 years was long remembered as ‘the most just and learned of all who ruled the English state’.
Michael Wood is an historian, filmmaker and author of well over 100 documentaries including the recent Story of China and The Story of England, set in Kibworth in the East Midlands, ‘the most innovative history series ever on TV’ (Independent). Michael has a special interest in Anglo-Saxon history, and in addition to his bestselling books, In Search of the Dark Ages and Domesday, Michael has written many academic articles on Athelstan’s life and times as part of a long-term project. He recently received the British Academy President’s Medal for outreach in History.
