This workshop supports learners to evaluate the influence of social, historical and literary context on a variety of written texts and to develop an awareness of the development of English Literature.

Moving from the Learning Centre into the Treasures Gallery, participants will be guided through activities focused on the collection material on display. They will work in small groups to explore texts, using close reading and exploring links between literary works and the cultural environment in which they were created and received.

Students will work in small groups and the session will explore aspects of poetry, drama and the novel through materials such as contextual items such as contemporary reviews, historical documents, personal writings, biographical details and recordings.

Alongside activities, students will also be introduced to other British Library online resources which they can use to support their ongoing research and study.
