A British Library conservation and digitisation project
Mélodie Doumy, Curator of Chinese Collections at the British Library, talks about ongoing work to conserve, digitise and make available online nearly 800 manuscripts of the Lotus Sutra in Chinese, placing them back in the original context of their production.
This four-year project, running from the start of August 2017 to the end of July 2021, is sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation and falls under the umbrella of the International Dunhuang Project (IDP). It ensures the long-term preservation of important Buddhist items, which were all found in the Mogao Library Cave (cave 17), near the oasis town of Dunhuang, in Northwest China, and now belong to the Stein Collection.
