About our speakers

  • As an LGBTQ+ writer, Robert Tregoning hopes to help children and adults alike to accept and celebrate all that makes us uniquely ourselves. His book Out of the Blue is a celebration of living in ALL the colours of the rainbow.
  • Patrice Lawrence is an award-winning writer, born in Brighton and raised in an Italian-Trinidadian family. In her book, Our Story Starts in Africa, we join Paloma and her aunty in Trinidad to discover their shared history, from ancient warrior queens and talking drums, through the dark days of colonisation and slavery, to the emergence of a thriving, contemporary Africa.
  • Viviane Schwarz is an award-winning writer and illustrator of picture books, comics, craft books and interactive books. She also invents games, teaches, and draws on stage.

What to expect

  • Hear Robert and Patrice reading their books aloud and bringing them to life for students.
  • Watch as these fabulous authors create their own handmade concertina books and fill them with brand new stories about themselves
  • Join in as they offer playful prompts to spark your students’ ideas for zig-zag books where they’re the heroes.
  • Follow step-by-step tips from Viviane Schwarz to make a special concertina book with pop-up elements.

Please have A4 paper, pencils and scissors at the ready, so that children can kick-start their book-making adventures.

About Step inside your story

Celebrating representation and inclusivity in children’s books, Step inside your story invites primary school students across the UK to create concertina books and place themselves at the heart of their own stories. The aim is to show that everyone can be the hero of a story and anyone can be an author. We provide free tips and instructions on the Discovering Children's Books website with the help of beloved authors and illustrators.
