The press as an important force in Caribbean history.

The Eccles Centre’s Summer Scholars season of free in-person lunchtime talks explores the exciting and wide-ranging research into the Americas collections at the British Library by the Eccles Centre’s Fellows and Award winners. The talks take place in the British Library Entrance Hall bookshop and attendees are welcome to bring their lunch.

Crowdsourcing the History of Slavery via Newspapers

The Agents of Enslavement research project used crowdsourcing to explore the history of slavery via 18th- and 19th-century Barbadian newspapers. Graham Jevon reflects on the use of crowdsourcing as a method of historical research and public engagement, discusses some of the early insights of this project, and looks ahead to a potential larger spin-off project.

The Royal Family and Jamaica in the 20th Century

In March 2022, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge undertook a royal tour of Jamaica. This talk uses the British Library’s newspaper collections to explore how previous royal visits were received and reported, and asks when the seeds of Jamaican republicanism really took root and began to grow.

Graham Jevon is currently cataloguer for the Endangered Archives Programme and he was one of the Library’s 2021 Coleridge Fellows, where he carried out this research project. Graham has a doctorate in British imperial history and a postgraduate certificate in data science.

Philip Abraham is the Fellowship Manager and Caribbean Studies Lead in the Eccles Centre for American Studies. His PhD on early modern Barbados was awarded in 2017.

This event is organised by the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library. The Eccles Centre exists to support and promote creative research and lifelong learning about the Americas, through the world-class collections of the British Library.
