A mesmerising Japanese puppet show

Among the treasures of the British Library’s is the only known copy of the play Kōchi hōin godenki which tells the story of the Buddhist monk Kōchi Hōin. Printed in 1685 the text was among the books collected by the German doctor Engelbert Kaempfer who lived in Nagasaki from 1690 to 1692. It was ‘rediscovered’ in the British Library collections 1962.

Old Jōruri, a traditional Japanese puppet theatre which originated in the 17th century, is rarely performed outside Japan. Featuring realistic puppets with lifelike features and beautifully embroidered Japanese costumes, this unique performance, specially commissioned by The Japan Foundation, tells the story of Kōchi Hōin. It is accompanied by a complementary talk on the play and the remarkable story of its discovery.
