Melissa Addey has written eleven historical novels set in three very different historical eras and is currently researching a fourth. Her debut was Editor’s Choice by the Historical Novel Society and she has a PhD in Creative Writing. She was the 2016 Leverhulme Writer in Residence at the British Library for a year: join her to get started on your own journey to publishing historical fiction.

The webinar will cover:
  • Getting inspired: where to get ideas and how to know if they’ll work.
  • Doing the research: how to start as well as knowing when to stop. Plus: how to get your own world-class historian to help out!
  • Planning vs. pantsing: the best of both worlds.
  • Your opening… and closing: leaving the reader always wanting more.
  • Getting it finished: pushing on through setbacks, blocks and dead ends.
  • Now the hard work starts: editing from the first draft to publishable quality.
  • Self-publishing (Indie) vs. the traditional route: how to do either.
  • Writing a series
  • Extras: maps, illustrations, covers and formatting: where to find the professionals?
  • What next? Marketing the book and next steps on your career as an author.

You’ll receive a video of the session (so you can book even if you can't attend live), all the slides from the webinar with plenty of useful resources listed: books to read, courses to take, software to use, editor contacts and more. You’ll also receive e-copies of Melissa Addey’s two historical novellas, The Consorts and The Cup.

Praise for Melissa Addey’s past workshops at the British Library:

Many thanks for your terrific and inspiring workshop that’s given me renewed hope, and also for all the materials.

A superb session has helped me focus and break the log jam for me. Will recommend it to others!

I came to look for motivation to reprise the writing of my first long novel and left with renewed enthusiasm and several practical actions to tackle the job.

Really clear and well informed. Her talk was inspiring and motivating, I have started writing my novel again after a few months' break so thank you. The materials and video are fantastic too.
