Votes for Women

Our new free website reveals how the suffragists and suffragettes campaigned for the right to vote

Published date:

On the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which extended the vote to some women for the first time, we launch Votes for Women, a new free website exploring the campaign for women’s suffrage.

Drawing on our collection, the site brings together digitised scrapbooks, political pamphlets, photographs and posters to reveal how the suffragists and suffragettes campaigned for this democratic right. Browse new short articles that look at the campaign through the prisms of class, race and daily experience, and explore introductions to key figures in the movement, from Millicent Fawcett and the Pankhursts to Sophia Duleep Singh, Dora Thewlis and Kitty Marion.
