Our suspension of auto renewal fees is coming to an end and we will reinstate the renewal fee of £5.45 from September 2021.

British Library On Demand is now offering a full service, including loans.

We continue to take extra precautions to ensure you, our staff and the items remain safe to use for all. The loan period will begin once the items have been despatched from The British Library.

Loans will be automatically renewed if they are not returned prior to the end of the loan period and any notifications concerning items on loan will continue to be sent to the requesting library.

Ensuring Collection Security

Re-instating the loan renewal fee encourages the return of items.

We expect an increase in demand for loans in the new academic year. As such, we want to sure ensure that all users have fair access to our collection items.

As more of our colleagues return to site we also have more capacity to process the return of loans. There is an extra benefit of ensuring collection care and security on our loan items when they are returned.

Ensure your details are up to date

The On Demand loan service allows customers requesting items available for home reading to be delivered to an alternative address. This can either be done through the On Demand interface or through ARTEmail. You can find further information on our ARTEmail Guide. The requesting Library, remains responsible for the return of the loan, renewal charges and any lost items fees that may become applicable. Should you ask your end user to return the loan direct please ensure that you are in a position to track return of the item to the British Library.

If you are unable to requests loans, or your request is rejected please contact Customer Services. Loans are only available to users with On Demand business accounts. You can manage your business account settings through British Library Customer Services.

Should our capacity become stretched, or the situation with Covid-19 change, please be aware that we may need to scale back our operations.
