Photograph of one the tombs of Tipu Sultan's family, at Vellore in Tamil Nadu, taken by the Madras School of Industrial Arts around 1868, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. The old 16th-century Vijayanagara Fort at Vellore is one of the finest examples of military architecture in South India. It was considered the strongest fortress in the Carnatic in the 1740s. In the 1780 an English garrison held out against Haidar Ali, ruler of Mysore and one of their most formidable rivals, for over two years. After the fall of Seringapatam in 1799 and the death of Tipu Sultan, son of Haidar Ali, Tipu's family were detained in the fort; after the Mutiny of 1806 they were transferred to Calcutta. The Tombs of Tipu Sultan's Family are situated to the east of the fort. The tomb in this view is possibly that of Tipu Sultan's wife who died in 1834, situated in a walled enclosure, to the right of the entrance.
