A plate from 'The Black Man's Lament,' an anti-slavery poem written by Amelia Opie. The poem is a narrative of the life of a slave and was originally published as part of a collection of articles for children. It follows the story of an African man's capture by slave traders, his journey to the West Indies on a slave ship, and the work he was forced to perform on the sugar plantations.
