From 1712 to 1853 there was a heavy tax on soap making in England. There were also laws that prohibited soap from being made in batches of less than 1 ton and this barred small entrepreneurs from producing their own. After Gladstone lifted the English soap tax in 1853 the soap trade boomed. Advances in technology and science meant that inexpensive soap could be produced and for the first time everyone could afford to buy it, turning soap from a luxury item to one that was used on a daily basis.
