Map Of Great Britain, Ca. 1450

Medium: Watercolour
Date: 1450

Map of the British Isles produced in Italy, illustrating the text of the Latin translation (1406) of Claudius Ptolemy's "Geographia" (of ca. 150 AD). The map is not Ptolemaic but a simplified version of an Italian nautical chart showing England and Scotland separated by a isthmus. This may also be the first map to name the English Channel: "britanicus oceanus nunc canalites Anglie"
