May
f. 22v-23

The miniature for May forms a striking parallel with others by Bening and his workshop. Ladies and gentlemen can be seen taking part in the traditional May festivities, when people went out to the woods to collect flowers and green branches to decorate their homes. It was a celebration of the first spring planting symbolic of a return to life and fertility.
