The cross-carpet page at the beginning of St Matthew's Gospel is probably the best known decorated page in the manuscript, because its well-defined design has been frequently reproduced. On the opposite page the Gospel opens with the Latin words: 'Liber generationis iesu christi', The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, presented in elaborate initials and display capitals.

This version of Turning the Pages does not require the Shockwave plug-in. It foregoes the interactive animation that lets you 'virtually' turn pages and brings you the same high-quality images of our greatest books in standard web pages.
