This map is from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). It is copied from a map by Giacomo Gastaldi. The geography of the northern Italian state of Piedmont (meaning"at the foot of the mountains") is dominated by the Alps and the valley of the Po River.
