Common Preface Pages 376-7

This elaborately decorated page introduces the common preface to the mass. Christ appears in two vignettes. In one he appears in glory, and in the other he is on the cross. The page is designed to show the passing from the Old to the New Testaments through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, which is about to be played out once again in the celebration of the mass. The importance of this stage in the service is reinforced by the magnificent marginal architectural feature in which the Virgin and Child are adored by the missal's patrons, the abbot of Sherborne and the bishop of Salisbury.

This version of Turning the Pages does not require the Shockwave plug-in. It foregoes the interactive animation that lets you 'virtually' turn pages and brings you the same high-quality images of our greatest books in standard web pages.
